Owning an independent pharmacy can be both rewarding and exhausting! In fact, I believe all pharmacy owners are sitting on a goldmine and with the right strategies in place the business can take you from where you are to where you want to be! And most importantly, have a lifestyle along the way!
Having a lifestyle can very a lot between each pharmacy owner! I can attest that when I opened my pharmacy back in 2011, the first thing I wanted was no nights, no weekends, no holidays and no drive thru window! Kind of sounds unheard of in the retail pharmacy business!
I wanted to own a business and not have the business own me! One thing for sure is you don’t have to be a pharmacist to own a drug store, I’m not a pharmacist. You must have a pharmacist on board that can follow directions. Over the past seven years I can proudly say, I never missed any of my three children’s activities. I attended every swim meet and cheerleading competition. These events just weren’t local, most of them included extensive traveling and time to get to there.
Also, I’m an avid cyclist and ride mountain bikes for fun and exercise. Living a lifestyle of choice and owning a business is very important me and should be a top priority to you as well.
So, what do you do?
First thing you need to do is have clarity on your purpose and decide where you want to go. (goals) Then dig deep down and understand why you want these things to happen and focus on the necessity of getting there. No matter what, this is what I’m going to do and simply do the things to get you there.
I like to call these steps a framework. On a piece of paper, start on the left side and say this is where I am now! On the right side you mark this is where I want to go! The middle part are the steps required to get you there. Step one, two, three, etc.
For example, let’s say you want to have more time to spend working on your business being proactive and focus on strategy and less time working in the business being reactive and doing tactical activities.
To do this and assuming you are a pharmacist owner, the first thing is to hire a relief pharmacist or ask for more hours with your current relief pharmacist. The only way to free up your time is to do this. And if you say I can’t afford to pay the additional hours then you really need to do this.
Left side, you are here… no time to work on business. Right side, where you want to go, hire a relief pharmacist so you can work on business.
Here are the steps,
1: post an advertisement for a relief pharmacist,
2: develop processes, procedures and expectations for the new position,
3: collect resumes,
4: schedule interviews,
5: do the interviews,
6: call the references,
7: hire the right person,
8: put them on the schedule, done!
Using frameworks is an easy way of outlining the simple but necessary steps to get things done and get you where you want to go. If you found this helpful and would like to learn more about implementing strategies in your business schedule a free strategy session today.
