What Is A Customer?

Uncategorized Jun 10, 2019

As a fellow business owner, I would like to share with you one of best training topics for both you and your entire staff. This should be introduced immediately upon being hired and at your next employee meeting. The sooner the better.

I used this technique in my store many times when a notice a staff member that showed a little attitude or was frustrated for some reason.  In fact, your entire staff needs to be aware and constantly reminded of this simple but easily forgotten topic. It’s the only reason why you’re in business and the only reason why your employees even have a job.

Here’s why.

Over the years I have learned that complacency in the workplace is the down fall of most businesses. And once you recognize it, it should be wiped out immediately.

A study found that the average American business loses 15% of its customer base each year.

·         68% of customers who stop trading from one business and go to another do so because of poor or indifferent service.

·         14% leave because of an unsatisfactorily resolved dispute or complaint.

·         9% leave because of price.

·         5% go elsewhere based on a recommendation

·         1% die

So, 82% go somewhere else because of a customer service issue.

To help gain control of this statistic, you must continually convey and remind your staff of what a customer is! This one topic will resonate with your staff and your customers will feel the experience that they deserve in doing business with you. And most importantly this topic alone will separate you from all your competitors.

What is a Customer?

A customer is the most important person in any business.

A customer is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.

A customer is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it.

A customer does us a favor when he comes in.

We aren’t doing him a favor by waiting on him.

A customer is part of our business – not an outsider.

A customer is not just money in the cash register.

He is a human being with feelings and deserves to be treated with respect.

A customer is a person who comes to us with his needs and his wants.

It is our job to fill them.

A customer deserves the most courteous attention we can give him.

He is the lifeblood of this and every business. He pays your salary.

Without him we would have to close our doors. Don’t ever forget that.

Conveying this What is a customer topic to your staff is a great foundation to creating a culture of happy employees who understand the importance of what a customer is.

And remember, Only Happy Customers Come Back!
